In most American homes, a computer is standard and with that computer comes some form of media player. Today these media players have become quintessential to our everyday entertainment seeing as their sole function is to play audio and video files from the computer. The problem is, as we have advanced technologically, consistently adding the newest most efficient and trendy programs and software to the pot, our standard media players limits us to its capacity. Only being able to access certain file types, not allowing us to run movies and type simultaneously and they certainly aren’t customizable.

That was until the VLC media player hit the scene in 1996! What started out as something else entirely has become so popularly necessary that everyone seems to be flocking to download this advanced godsend. The basic story is that the VLC media player was created in France by students of a highly prestigious engineering university, and that it was originally supposed to supply as a server network project. Now, not much can be found on the students who developed the VLC but a wealth of information, reviews and updates regarding VLC are swarming and seemingly overwhelming the search engines.

It is documented that the fabulously essential media tool has reached more than 9 million downloads and that number rises by moment. If you’re wondering why, I’ll tell you. Simply put, because it’s comprehensive, free and open source.  Not to mention it is easily one of the very best open source players available. Did I mention it’s free? Another of the many outstandingly exclusive reasons why this program has been such a success is that it has the capability to stream almost all, yes all, audio and video formats. What other player can claim all these facts to be true?

I briefly mentioned that the VLC was customizable. Being that the VLC media player is an open source program, anyone can add what they see fit to it. Making it the ultimate and most versatile personal media player offered!

I say hands down that there aren’t any other players one will need to suffice their everyday and ongoing needs. Because it is portable and easily simple to understand, the VLC promises to stick around for far more than a long time. Ten years in the making the VLC 1.0 was recently released and now the VLC is the most popular free media player around. Not too shabby for a program that was intended for a different use, huh?
