Ever recall the case of the Titanic which its makers call the “unsinkable”? Maybe this is also due the deceiving appearance of the overall structure of the vessel and the various luxury features and rooms never before built that it could offer its passengers which lead and convinced many to believe to this hearsay. Unfortunately, there eventually came a time when this statement was tested by fate and made such claim invalid. Could the same be said for the VLC media player?

Although there is a distinct difference to the example earlier to this technological tool, the similarities start with how the system performs. Sure enough the VLC is very much credited to the fact to its multiple functionalities that it could bring its users.

Such success is attributed to its multiple file playing functions and platform supporting functions, such features which make it very easy even for the novice user to use it on whatever system that they are in. Users all over the world also credit customized and extended user controls over media files played. No wonder it has been a favourite among media supporters in the industry.

However, there is a certain buffer overflow detected in the VLC player which occurs in the subtitling options of the video being played. Such buffer flow could be used by the hacker in terms of including a harmful code into the subtitle file, making it possible for them to control the user’s computer system. Such occurrence is possible to all users regardless of what platform they are in.

Fortunately, the bug is fixed after a release is made after the 0.8.6e version of the software. After updating the tool with the release, users need not worry about the said attacks to the system, providing assurance that VLC is attack free.
