Nowadays people expect their computers to do everything for them, just short of taking out the trash.  We use it to pay bills, keep in touch with family and friends, work, research and, of course, entertainment.  Naturally then, one of the standard fixtures on any computer today is a media player, a program that can open and play audio, video, VCD and DVD files right in the computer.  While it is most often used for playing music and watching movies, a media player can also be used to play audio recordings, educational videos, video presentations and more.  Luckily for everyone, there is a free media player that does all one needs:  VLC Media Player.
  
VLC Media Player has all you could ask for for playing multimedia.  It has support for just about every audio and video file type there is, plays streaming videos and lets you decode VCD and DVD movie content without the need of a third-party decoder.  This free media player boasts support for an outstanding number of file formats and stream protocols, and also many vlc skins to choose from  The complete list is on the official web site, but all standard formats such as .wma, .mp3, .mpg, .avi and various DVD and VCD types are all covered.  In addition to this, VLC can play even unfinished video downloads. 

Another great thing about VLC Media Player is its refreshingly simple look and behavior.  You rarely see that nowadays where everything seems to be bloatware and spyware.   It cannot be said, for example, about Microsoft Windows Media Player which has all these odd tabs and buttons in the wrong places.  But VLC is so uncluttered that it’s hard to imagine how anyone can fail to learn how to use it. Worse still, other commercial and free media players nag you to make them your default player or install add-ons and premium services that you don’t want.  VLC doesn’t do that.
 
Instead, VLC Media Player is a free media player, period.  People who just want a solid and reliable program to play their music, audio and video files on will get exactly what they want.  There is no obligation to register, pay or upgrade.  There are no unnecessary features to clutter up the user interface.  And no icons are forced on your system tray or taskbar.
 
VLC Media Player is a cross-platform client program.  It  runs on MacOSX, Windows, Linux, BSD and others.   This portability only adds to the strong case one can make for this free media player.

Perhaps the only gripes one can make about VLC Media Player are first, the scanty documentation, and second a few minor bugs with its skin feature.  But these are very minor issues indeed.  If you just want a free media player that plays your multimedia files as you need it, whenever you need it, VLC is a great choice.
